On September 9th 2015 Queen Elizabeth II becomes the longest reigning British Monarch, passing the record set by her great, great grandmother, Queen Victoria, of 63 years and 7 months. Victoria was the symbol of the age, sturdy as a steam engine and as solidly built as any of Eugenius Birchs cast iron seaside piers. Her longevity was interpreted as proof that theirs was, as she herself described it, “An epoch of progress”.
September 9th is the day that casts in a new light, the National Anthems prayer about a Queen who is “long to reign over us”. From 1952 onwards, our Queen has served her people for over two generations and a period of unprecedented change. A Cold War, the transition from British Empire to Commonwealth, Glasnost and the fall of the Berlin Wall, a man on the moon, the computer and the internet, enabling globalisation in commerce and culture. The country may have undergone retrenchment, yet the Queen herself is the most respected figure in British public life, acclaimed by world leaders and admired across the globe. Like her great, great, grandmother before her, the Queen has requested there be no celebrations on September 9th, an attitude that is shaped by respect for her formidable predecessor.
This puzzle was created to celebrate some of the key events of Queen Elizabeths reign, from her Coronation (in 1953), through Commonwealth visits, walkabouts, the birth of her children, Trooping the Colour, State Opening of Parliament, receiving Heads of State, her love of horses and horse racing and her close knit family. Box size 41 x 29 x 5cm, completed puzzle size 68 x 49cm.
